Paris

A Woman of Substance

Paris matters to the novel as a working outpost of Emma Harte’s retail business: its store is monitored through its accounts, and problems there lead Emma to consider changes in administration. Paula’s assignment to Paris also reveals how Emma’s commercial priorities shape the younger woman’s role within the family enterprise.

The Paris store in Emma’s business

The Paris store appears in the same sequence of financial review as the New York store. Paula reports that the New York branch has made a strong turnaround, while Emma studies the Paris figures and sees a different picture: the store is running into trouble. The contrast makes the accounts more than routine paperwork; they guide Emma’s next decisions about where her attention and management should go.

Emma’s proposed intervention

After reviewing the Paris balance sheets, Emma asks Paula to go there when they leave New York. She believes the store’s administration needs changes, and her request places Paula directly within that response. The episode presents Paris as a location connected to the practical oversight of Emma’s far-flung retail operations, rather than as a backdrop for sightseeing or social life.

Paula’s assignment

Paula does not initially intend to go to Paris. She had planned to spend time in Yorkshire and tour the northern stores, but tells Emma she will go wherever she is most needed. Her hesitation is subdued: she keeps her voice casual, then flushes and lowers her eyes when Emma fixes her with a surprised look. Emma’s plan nevertheless takes precedence. Later, Paula is in Paris taking care of several matters at the store for her grandmother, and Emma tells Henry Rossiter that Paula is due back on Thursday. The proposed assignment has thus become practical work, linking the city to Paula’s growing participation in the family business.
